Other Online Video Sharing Options Besides YouTube

What Are the Other Options For Sharing Your Video On The Internet

YouTube is clearly the biggest video-sharing site today.  It’s 3 Billion+ monthly visitors account for more than 85% of all U.S. traffic to video sharing sites.  Google Videos has now been incorporated into YouTube.  Microsoft’s Bing Videos is mostly a search engine that index’s video content from other sites including YouTube.  Yahoo’s video site is no longer accepting uploads.

One of the largest alternative video sharing sites to YouTube is now Facebook.  We will cover Facebook in much more detail in future posts.  Let’s first look at the other sites where video content is being viewed.

Dailymotion.com

Dailymotion.com is a French video-sharing site that was launched about 2 months after YouTube was launched. It is being viewed by ~93 million visitors per month worldwide; this includes 16 million Americans (5.5MM unique visitors per month).  The site has a nice international flavor with global reach.  Small country flag icons help identify where videos are from.  The site tends to attract more professional videos than amateur.  The site limits videos to 60 minutes in length, 2 GB file, and accepts videos up to 720P resolution.

Blinx.com

Based in the UK, Blinkx.com is one of the top 10 video search engines attracting ~13 million visitors per month.  The site has indexed over 35 million hours of searchable video and is known for its advanced search engine capabilities that use a combination of conceptual search, speech recognition and video analysis software to accurately find and qualify video content.

Metacafe.com

Based out of California, Metacafe.com specializes in short form original video entertainment content in different categories such as movies, TV, sports and music.  The content tends to be more curated than other sites.  A panel of 80,000 community members reviews uploaded videos before they are released to the general public.  The site has a Producer Reward System that pays video posters.  Once a video has 20,000 views, the site will pay a contributor $5 for every 1,000 views.  The site, which has 53 million uploaded videos, is attracting ~43 million global visitors per month (13 million from the U.S.) who view 400 million videos each month. The average video length on the site is 90 seconds.

Vimeo.com

Vimeo.com is a popular video-sharing site that tends to be used by professionals to showcase their work as well as by amateur film making enthusiasts.  A base account that comes with some restrictions is free.  The site is known for providing more flexibility such as more control in being able to select what thumbnail image is used for your video.

Break.com

Break.com is another popular video-sharing site that is aimed at the 18 – 35 year-old male viewer.  The site tends to focus on humor and offers lots of different channels to categorize your video.  Each video is limited to 500 MB size limit and there is a 5 TB limit per user.

Some of the most popular travel-oriented sites that accept video uploads are:

Tripadvisor.com

With 20 million members 50 million user-generated reviews, and 50 million monthly visitors, tripadvisors.com is one of the largest and most influential travel related sites on the web.  Members can upload videos (10 minute/100MB limit) to the tripadvisor.com community without writing a review.  Adding tags helps associate the video with relevant content across the site.

Tripfilms.com

Per the company’s website, a travel website that brings destinations to life through video.  The site provides awards to videos that have lots of views.  One of the more popular travel-oriented video sharing sites that attracts video posts from travel bloggers.

Zoomandgo.com

Small travel site with global reach where people can share their travel experiences and connect with other travelers.

Traveldudes.org

A smaller video-sharing site with tips, ideas and advice from other travelers.

What about China:

Todou and Youku

Since YouTube is blocked in China, if you want to reach the world largest population base, you might want to consider the two premier video sharing-sites in China: Todou (170 million monthly visitors) or Youku (203 million monthly visitors)

Where Should a Small Travel-Related Business Post Their Video?

Given all these different video distribution options, where should a travel-oriented business post their video?  This depends in part on the size of the business and the marketing goals of the business.  For a smaller, travel related business we would recommend centering video marketing efforts around a YouTube channel.  We would then consider posting a video or two on some of the other video sites that tend to have more traffic and that have demographics that match the target consumers of the travel business.  Likely candidates would be dailymotion.com (general travel businesses) and break.com (more youth-oriented venture travel businesses).  The two travel sites that we would certainly consider are tripfilms.com and tripadvisors.com.  Our next post will cover the role social networks play in the digital video sharing landscape.
